How to use the toolbar in After Effects

The toolbar at the top is where you’ll find your basic tools for creating and editing. It’s the launch pad for most of what you’ll do.

Steps to use the toolbar

Look at the very top of After Effects — that row of icons is your toolbar. Don’t see it? Press Ctrl+1 (Windows) / Cmd+1 (Mac) and it’ll show up.

Click the Selection Tool (V) to move layers around. The Hand Tool (H) lets you drag your comp view.

Hold down on a tool icon and you’ll see more options — like different shapes under the Rectangle Tool.

One more thing

Learn the shortcuts: V for Selection, G for Pen, H for Hand, Z for Zoom. Seriously, this saves way more time than clicking around.
