How to use folders in the Project panel in After Effects

Folders are your best friend when projects get big. They work just like folders on your computer — organize everything and keep the chaos at bay.

Steps to use folders in the Project panel

Right-click in the Project panel and hit New Folder. Give it a clear name — “Music,” “Graphics,” “Footage,” whatever makes sense for what goes inside.

Creating a new folder in the After Effects Project panel

Click and drag files into the folder. They stay neatly grouped, but nothing changes in your timeline — they are purely for organization on your end.

Dragging assets into a folder inside the After Effects Project panel

You can nest folders inside each other too if you need multiple levels of organization.

One more thing

Keep a dedicated folder for Precomps. Once you have multiple compositions floating around, it saves you from confusion later.
