How to set composition resolution, frame rate, and duration in After Effects

Every project is different, so you’ll often need to set composition settings to match what you’re actually making. Here’s how to dial in the resolution, frame rate, and duration that your composition needs.

Steps to set composition resolution, frame rate, and duration

When you create a new comp, the Composition Settings window appears automatically. Already have one open? Just go to Composition → Composition Settings from the top menu.

In the dialog, type your width and height. 1920×1080 is the standard for most online video, but 1080×1920 works if you’re making vertical content.

Then set your frame rate. 30fps is the safe choice for online video, but 24fps gives you that cinematic film look if that’s what you’re going for.

Finally, set duration. Type 00:00:15:00 for 15 seconds, or however long your composition needs to be.

Hit OK and you’re done — your composition is locked in with the right settings.

One more thing

These aren’t permanent. You can change any settings anytime — nothing’s locked. Just hit Ctrl+K (Windows) / Command+K (Mac) to jump back into the settings window whenever you need to adjust your composition settings again.
