How to rename layers in After Effects

Clean names equal a clean mind. Rename layers to save tons of guesswork later when you’re hunting for something specific.

Steps to rename layers

Select the layer in your timeline.

Press Enter (Windows) / Return (Mac) to edit the name. Type something clear like “Title_Main” or “BG_Footage,” then press Enter/Return again to confirm.

Repeat for other layers so your timeline stays readable and organized.

One more thing

Use short prefixes like TXT_, BG_, or FX_ so related layers group together visually in your timeline. Makes scanning way easier.
