Very often you need footage or images inside your project. It is straightforward to import files in After Effects — takes like 5 seconds.
Steps to import video and images
Go File → Import → File from the top menu, or just press Ctrl+I (Windows) / Cmd+I (Mac).

A file browser pops up. Pick your videos, images, audio, whatever you need. Select what you want and hit Import. Your files show up in the Project panel on the left, ready to use.

Drag them into a composition and they’re on your timeline. You’re done. Start editing.

One more thing
You can skip the menu entirely. Just drag files directly from your computer into the Project panel — way faster once you realize you can do it that way.
